Surprise, surprise: Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston are getting married, Us Weekly reports.
The couple told the magazine that they got engaged two weeks ago — and not only that, they also did so without the blessing of their parents. (Ms. Palin and Mr. Johnston also appear on the cover of the magazine, along with their son, Tripp.)
It’s no secret that Mr. Johnston and Bristol’s parents–– Todd and Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor — have not always been on the best of terms. So it’s probably no surprise that Bristol was uncertain how her mother, who was kept in the dark, would respond to the engagement.
“It is intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be,” Bristol told Us Weekly. “Hopefully she will jump on board.”
For their part, the Palins have released a statement to NBC News, though one that makes it hard to say how on board they really are. “Bristol at 19 is now a young adult,” the Palins said. “We obviously want what’s best for our children. Bristol believes in redemption and forgiveness to a degree most of us struggle to put in practice in our daily lives.”
The news of the engagement is the latest chapter in what has been a roller-coaster ride for Bristol Palin and Mr. Johnston since 2008, when Bristol became pregnant and Sarah Palin was chosen for the Republican ticket.
Bristol Palin and Mr. Johnston were reportedly on the road to getting married then, but instead eventually called off the wedding.
After that, Mr. Johnston was not shy in taking potshots at Sarah Palin, including commenting that the former governor called Trig, her son who has Down syndrome, “retarded.” (Sarah Palin, for her part, knocked Mr. Johnston for, among other things, posing for Playgirl.)
According to Us Weekly, the reconciliation process began when the two got together to hash out a custody plan for Tripp.
“I really thought we were over,” Mr. Johnston told the magazine. “So when I went, I had no hope. I think we both just started talking — and then we took Tripp for a walk.”
Mr. Johnston has also apologized recently for his war of words with the Palins, telling People magazine that he was angry after his breakup with Bristol and made comments about the family “that were not completely true.”
“I have already privately apologized to Todd and Sarah,” Mr. Johnston told the magazine. “Since my statements were public, I owe it to the Palins to publicly apologize.”
As for when the wedding might happen, Us Weekly editors told news outlets on Wednesday that they expected the couple to marry soon.
